Research On Sound

Different types of sounds used in media.

Sound and music are a common thing that is an essential to most films. It has been noted that even in early times of the film industry even silent films still had some type of sound contributed to it. The sound is very beneficial in films it helps identify the imaginary world, it can provide and give an audience hints to know a character's mood or if an environment is bad or not. In addition, sound allows viewers to identify these type of things and seek out important information in films.

Diegetic Sound

 What is a Diegetic sound?

Diegetic sound is a sound that only the characters on the screen can hear, thus making the sound of one character talking to another a diegetic sound.

 What is a Non-Diegetic sound?

A Non-Diegetic sound is the opposite of a Diegetic sound it is a sound that the audience can hear but the characters can not. Any music in the background is an example of a non-digetic sound  it just adds to scenery and atmosphere it is not something the characters are supposed to hear.

Another different type of sound:

Non-simultaneous

What is Non-simultaneous sound?

A non-simultaneous sound is a sound that performs early in the story, earlier than an image in a film. This type of sound can help the viewers gain information about the film without even watching the scenes take place. See how sound is very valuable. Good sound is key to a good production.

What is Lighting? (Research on my role)

What is lighting?

There is many different lights that are involved in film and television productions. I have decided to take the time out to research different lighting and sounds that are involved in my role and also in the studio provided for us.

What is lighting used for?

Lighting is used mainly to help enhance an atmosphere, mood and even to add to a scenario to build suspense. Overall it is mostly used to make a set stand out, look professional and clear.

 Key Lighting

You have your key lighting which is known to be one of the important lights that a camera person uses. Its main purpose is to highlight the main object. It is normally combined with a 3-point setup, which also includes a backlight and an additional light to add more focus on an object.

Fill lighting

The fill light is similar to the key lighting as it also uses a 3-point set up, and its function is to decrease contrast and shadows around an item and a subject. It does this by being positioned at a different angle to the main key light. It is normally delicate and softer than the key light.

High key lighting

High key lighting decreases the amount of contrast due to the fact that the lighting is very powerful. This creates a pleasant and jolly feeling in the video or picture.

<-- An example a picture taken in high key lighting as you can see the lighting is very powerful and you capture almost everything in the picture.

This is the type of lighting I am choosing for my magazine show as it would just give my show a clear appearance that would look quite professional to my viewers.

Skim Lighting

What Skim lighting does is send light rays at a deep angle across an illuminated surface, This throws any surface abnormalities into high relief, making the texture highlighted. Skim lighting is known to have a very powerful visual effect with focused beams of lights.

SCRIPT FOR MY OUTSIDER BROADCASTER ROLE

Script

Wehlia: Moving on to our next story, would you ever think to see a five-foot long python in a pond, well think again we are going live now from Southside shopping centre where Preaya will tell us the incident which had happened near and beside St George’s Park over to you Preaya

Preaya: Hey Wehlia as you can see there is a lot to talk about! Yesterday near St George’s Park right behind me was where this incident had happened where we saw a 5ft long python  floating in the pond. Reports say that people thought the python was a long branch it was not until they saw the python slithering out of the water.

Here is a witness who investigated the pond and discovered that there was a python floating in the water.

Preaya: What happened to lead you to find this python?

Hero: Well i was just eating my lunch on the bench beside the pond and I saw something that looked like a very thick branch and it even resembled a thick wire when I looked to inspect the water I saw its head pop out of the water and realised this wasn't a branch it was a python that was dead which started to float. After I reported this to the police animal control came and took the python out of the water and the body is now being disposed and handle by the RSPCA.

Here is an  another person who witnessed this snake whilst it was being captured by Animal control

Person: The Python was huge I have never seen one so big.

Person: Its crazy I just wonder how it got there and how long it has remained there for

Person: Its a good thing they found it I mean who knows imagine if it was alive.

Well overall its a good thing that this snake has been captured and has received the proper burial it needs, well this has been quite the extraordinary story, at the end of the day its a good thing that everything has been done and people can now go back to being safe and eating and being around the pond. Now back to Wehlia in the studio.

*Update*

This script had to be altered, due to the fact that we had some difficulties finding people to act as the witness. In the end we only got one person to act as the witness. So in the final edit you will see some changes in the script. Just thought I should notify that.

DEAR DIARY / SCRIPT FOR MY ROLE.

Dear Diary,

My role is to be an outside broadcaster, so I have been asked to create a script and, at least, interview two people about a particular subject.

I hoping that today I can revise my role and see what things are said in typical shows such as good morning Britain when an outsider broadcaster is present. I am also hoping to use today as the time where i can start creating, finishing and forming my script.

RISK ASSESSMENT - STUDIO PROJECT UNIT 5.6.7

In my project, I had to ensure that I have a health and safety risk assessment before starting on the production of my magazine show. Stating all the potential hazards that could occur once in the production phase and how we could prevent them from happening.

Dear Diary

Today I have been focusing on my new project which is to make a studio magazine show.

The criteria is that it has to be

  • No more than 20 minutes long
  • Must include one music act (that my tutor chooses)
  • Must include weather and news
  • Have two presenters ( One male & female)
  • Must have some interviews
  • Ensure that you make your own individual edits of it
  • Has to have some sort of advertisement in the show (Any)
  • Show must have some sort of game show
My role is that I'm going to be in charge of studio lighting and sound, I will also be an outside broadcaster. I'm looking forward to my role and have decided that I'm going to be revising and researching my role just to see how it is approached on theses particular shows. Such as good morning Britain, and breakfast.

I don't find my role challenging if anything I find my role something that could be easily accomplished without any struggles.

I already completed folder work which includes my proposal and I look forward to completing and doing my individual edit of this project.

STUDIO TOUR - INTRODUCTION

These are the  different types of equipment you can use in the television studio and pictures are provided so you can see the equipment.

<-- This is the analog sound desk which controls the different levels of voices and instruments, you can enhance the voices and adjust here for different sounds.

This is the lighting desk where you can turn lights on and off and dim them according to how you want it to appear in the studio.

<-- This the studio's lighting and it is used to enhance the look of the studio to make it appear brighter. The studio lighting is also used to make the green screen bright enough to function a good picture.

This is the talkback system this allows the director or assistant director to communicate to the floor manager.

This is the camera which is commonly used to shoot things around the studio. The handles on the camera are used to help rotate the camera if needed. Also, you have a focus and zoom function on the camera, which makes the camera person have the ability to zoom out or in when necessary and to make the picture look focused.

*FOLDER* UNIT 5.6.7 THE STUDIO PROJECT

Codes & Conventions

In my magazine program, you will see a variety of events happening, there will be
  • A News forecast
  • Weather forecast
  • A musical act and interview
  • A type of product advertisement
  • A gossip section about celebrities
  • A game show
My presentation of my magazine program would be styled in a quite modern sleek way, the appearance I am aiming for it to be similar to is E-news, simply because I like the fact that their layout looks very professional and modern.

The name of my Magazine styled show would be called STC News. The abbreviation of South Thames college and the word news associated towards it. I feel like using the whole name without the abbreviation would be too heavy to present on television so i decided to abbreviate it.

I would want the words to appear bold similar to E-news and also vibrant, so it can be eye-catching towards my viewers. The age group I tend to want my show to appeal to is towards the ages of 16-25 because I plan to make my show entertaining and also  relatable to people my age, whilst making it mature enough for older people to watch as well.

The news segment of my show will be presented formally and clear spoken. The two news reporters would be standing around a table or sitting down on a sofa. I say this because I want my news segment to add a comfortable casual feeling, to viewers that are watching it whilst relaxing on their sofa at home. Overall I won't really need many items for the news segment, if anything I would need some pens and some pencils to make the table look very informative, that's if I decide to present my news on a table, I'm a bit indecisive about where the news should be presented.

If I present the news on a sofa then I won't really need that much items, if anything I would need pillows to make the chairs look comfy and cosy.

The weather part of my work would be the same as it is normally presented on magazine shows, the woman/male  that is presenting the weather would usually stand behind a green screen, and locate the places and state the weather of different areas. I want the person who has the role to have a bit of personality and instead of just speaking about the weather, they should be able to engage the audience, making them feel entertained. Simply amusing people and contributing some humour into their role.

The only items I would need for the weather, is just a pointer ball pen to just point at the areas on the map I believe that using the pointer would look way better than using your hands.

In my show, i do tend to have a musical act as it is a necessary requirement that has to be a part of my show. I'm trying to structure the band in my show so they can perform songs in the intro of my show and through the end of my show. I will then eventually make sure the presenters interview them about their craft and talent.

Throughout my showthere will be breaks where there would be several product advertisements, just so the show does not go on for so long and does not add a boring appeal, as that could happen if my show is continuous.

The questions I plan to ask my musicians range from theses.

(Musicians who sing only)

  • What got you into music? / When did you start to begin an interest in music?
  • Do you have any musical inspirations?
  • (If they have a stage name) - Where does your stage name come from? What is your stage name based off?
  • Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
  • Do you have any practices you do before performing?
  • Is your family musical?
  • Do you perform in public, have gigs?
(Musicians that play instruments only)

  • When and why did you start playing?
  • Is your family musical?
  • Who are your favourite musicians?
  • Do you perform in public, have gigs?
  • Do you teach music?
  • Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
  • What was the first tune you learned?
  • Do you have any practices you do before performing?

When it comes to shooting my bands performance, I am making sure to shoot them in a variety of angles. When they first appear on the show and start performing, I would want to do a pan of the musicians and then later transition to a medium shot so we can see their attire and faces.

(Medium shot)

This is what I mean by medium shot, a nice shot where you can get the person face along with clothes they are wearing.

A camera shot video: Pan

The video shows an example of how I want to introduce my musical act, when they're about to perform. In a pan shot, to introduce the band in a way that will allow the audience to see the whole group and the members of the band. I will then transition the shots to a close up shot, so you can see the faces of them while they're singing and also to get the emotion on their faces.

I am hoping to capture the faces of the band and to get shots. whilst some of them are singing to show the passion they have for singing and their expressions as they hit every note, which would be helpful for viewers at home to see this as they could not be in the audience.

As for the game show bit of my magazine show, i am planning to do a game show where our viewers at home get the chance to get their numbers picked at random, giving them the chance win money. All they have to do is answer the ultimate question about what we had discussed in our celebrity gossip segment, if the caller answers the question right they will then get a cheque of £250.

Overall this game was inspired by Wendy Williams game sector of her show, she calls a random number submitted by a viewer and then asks them a question related to her show, but the only difference is that my question would be based on my celebrity gossip segment and my prize would be £250, whereas Wendy's is based on every segment on her show and her cash price can range up to £1000 to £2000.

My Documentary

Today I have finished my documentary and posted it on to YouTube, My documentary has overall lasted 7 minutes and 38 seconds and the script of my piece is below.

The finish product of my Documentary!

My experience with this documentary was really enjoyable it was a interesting experience and it was a challenging obstacle but it has helped me be more motivated and has gave me the determination to get things done quickly.

Script

Now in 2015 dating apps have been seen as a new trend to find love, with apps like tinder, uniform dating, and match.com they advertise claiming that if you use their website, you will find your perfect match. But this isn’t always the case I’m Preaya Dayeck and this is my documentary about the dark side of dating.

I have heard quite  a lot of stuff about a group called bye Felipe, which is run by a woman called Alexandra Tweten they have accounts on Facebook and Instagram, where they post pictures of men threatening women due to the fact that they got rejected on an online dating app. Not only does bye Felipe have its own social platform, it also has its own merchandise where people can buy hashtag bye Felipe sweatshirts + tops, I believe that it's good that something like bye Felipe exists as it is made to make females/males not be alone in this intimidating situation.

Overall it’s a good thing that this awareness is made to help others, however, this doesn’t stop millions people out there who are getting exploited, manipulated and scammed.

We all know in the online dating world there are numerous scams being taken place right now, and even when you browse some profiles some women/men tend to be more manipulative, and may even tell a white lie about their appearance or what they do as their career. But when in foreign countries such as China, online dating is seen as quite the intense the University college London did a study where they found out that dating websites in china, are mostly used by people who are doing huge scams to either make a huge sum of money or even to improve their profession. For example there has been many reports where beautiful women in china, create online dating accounts to scam a bachelor whilst on a date, once they get a date they eventually take the guy out to an expensive restaurant and the lady then orders a lot of expensive food, in hopes for the man to pick up the bill the bill can range from $100- $2000 and in most cases the man does pay for the bill, and after the date the lady does not contact him again. The lady then leaves with the ultimate jackpot which she has to split with the manager.

It just comes to show online dating isn’t always pitch perfect, and doesn’t always promise a happy ending full of love and companionship when articles like theses say otherwise.

Hey, guys it 10:20 and today I have decided that I'm going to be interviewing people, just to see what they think of online dating and their viewpoint. so you guys are going to follow me so come on let's go.

Questions I am going to ask people.

What do you think about online dating?
Can you name some popular online dating apps/websites?
Do you think online dating is still used to find your perfect match anymore?

Questions to ask my expert (Nikki) - That I did not get to post the footage because the quality was bad.

Do you believe online dating is great for finding your perfect match?
Do you think online dating can cause mental and health issues for some people
The next topic –
 After getting an expert's opinion.

Overall the interviews went really well and I managed to get really useful information, and mixed opinions of what the public thought about online dating. As you can see from the interviews there was one girl who thought online dating was disgraceful and one girl who thought it was perfect for finding your match!

The same person who stated online dating was disgraceful, was the only person who had a negative opinion and seemed to state more dangerous factors of online dating, whereas everyone else was saying positive naive things how it is perfect for finding your perfect match.

It just comes to show maybe not everyone is aware of the dark side of online dating, and how many thousands of articles are lurking around of horrible scenarios people have experienced whilst dating online. Will the dark side of online dating ever be defeated? and will the whole world be knowledgeable of it. Im Preaya Skerritt and I say One step at a time and maybe the dark side could be defeated.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One fault with my work, is that i forgot to add the clip where one of the people I was interviewing said that online dating was disgraceful. Another fault with my documentary was that at the start of my clip I stated that my name was Preaya Dayeck, and at the end of the documentary I stated that my name was Preaya Skerritt saying another surname that I obtain. However, this is just a simple mistake that  I can learn from and be cautious of next time when doing a project.

Dear Diary

Today is the day in which I'm hoping I can finish my documentary all I need to do is get an interview with Nikki my expert  and let her explain to me what goes through someone's mind when they wanna scam someone and also if she believes if online dating can cause mental health issue. I will then additionally ask her if she thinks online dating is still used to find your perfect match anymore.

I have edited a lot and I can ensure that my work will be finished by 5 today and will be ready for presentation.

*UPDATE* 03/01/16

Unfortunately, Nikki's footage was not used in my documentary as we had trouble retrieving the clip eventually we got the clip on a computer and realised that the video was shot badly, the lighting was not lit brightly enough making it not presentable and worth putting in my documentary.

Wednesday, 6 January 2016

Dear Diary

Today was a very protective day I managed to get a lot of work done, I decided to do a whole segment about online dating scams that have happened in China.

I did some research and found out that the men would easily get scammed and conned out of their money in China, beautiful Chinese ladies would make an online dating account to speak to men and will eventually arrange a date with them, once they get a date they would then order expensive food of the menu and the men would usually pay the tab, resulting in the lady earning loads of money that she then has to split with the manager of the restaurant. She has to split the money with the manager of the restaurant because most of the girls that do this in China have a deal with a manager of a restaurant and they bring these boys here to help the restaurant not only gain customers but more money too.

South Thames College Health and Safety Risk Assessment - (Documentary)

Dear Diary

Today I am still in the editing process on my documentary, I aim to do a voice recording today, to go along with some clips of my piece and I also plan to get an interview tomorrow by an expert to add another vox plot to my documentary, just to get a professional view towards online dating and ways it may trigger negative factors.

Overall I am aiming to finish my documentary next Monday as I believe a week is enough time for me in order to finish my documentary.

STC PRE-PRODUCTION PLAN FOR MY PRODUCTION BROKEN.
