DRUG USE IN LYRICS
My Proposal
Summary
My final major project will be a documentary on drug use in lyrics. I have chosen this topic, as I believe it is quite controversial and intriguing to discuss. This is a subject that isn't discussed all too often and can be quite taboo. Some music fans may not even be aware of the underlying messages in the music that they're listening to. I''m going to be the person that presents the dark side of drug use in lyrics to my audience.
The Content
The content of Drug use in Lyrics will include; the street-name's of drugs that are hidden in the lyrics people sing along to, the true meaning behind the songs and lyrics, crucial information on the drugs that are glamorised and how it affects people when used. I will also include vox-plots, where I will quiz the public about mainstream music, to find out whether they truly know what they're listening to.
Music
In Drug use in Lyrics there will be two different types of music. The first will be background music and second will be music that is analysed and discussed for the sake of the documentary. The music choice will range from different types musical artists including, 2PAC, Miley Cyrus, The Beatles and Tyga - the rapper. I have chosen these artists because their music may be different genres, but they are similar in lyrical content, which allegedly promotes drug use.
My Target Audience
The target audience for my documentary will be young people around the ages of 16-25. I believe that this age group is suitable because this is the age where a young person gains access and an interest to different genres of music. These genres include; rap, rock, indie, pop. I don't believe this documentary will be suitable for anyone under 16 years of age, due to the fact that they may not have access to the music that will be explored in this documentary and the themes that will be discussed in this documentary is simply not age appropriate. I also don't believe this documentary may appeal to those over the age of 25, as they may believe that they are already knowledgeable on this subject. Thus, I believe 16-25 is the perfect age group for this documentary.
Duration
The duration of Drug use in Lyrics will be approximately 10-15 minutes, this will be enough to cover all the crucial and important information in my piece. Drug use in Lyrics will be concise and to the point, highlighting the key points in the discussion! I believe that if the duration of Drug use in Lyrics is longer than 10-15 minutes it may lose appeal, and if it is too short I might not be able to include everything.
Style of Approach
Drug use in Lyrics will be a documentary, therefore it will be informative and factual. I am aiming to approach Drug culture in lyrics quite open minded in a sense that I want to look at this topic from all aspects to create awareness of song lyrics and its affiliation with drugs.
Primary aims
The primary aim for my documentary is to highlight the negative influence that specific music genres have on its target audience. In addition my primary aim is to raise awareness about how drugs can impact people and cause negative effects. Whilst also exposing the subliminal messages in the lyrics and revealing the undercover name for these drugs.
Timetable
On Wednesday the 23rd we break up for the Easter holiday, So I have decided to use my time wisely and do some research throughout my break. After the Easter break we return on the 11th of April, which is when I will start to begin the shooting of my final major project. I have given myself a deadline to complete this documentary which is the 24th of April and I am very positive and determined that I will finish this project by then.

Outline Structure
The outline structure of Drug use in lyrics will start of with a basic introduction where i will introduce myself to my viewers and explain briefly as to what my documentary is about. After the introduction I will then begin to educate my viewers on Class A drugs, which is a dangerous category of drugs that is mostly sang about by rappers and singers. Once I have fully made my viewers know about the disadvantages of these drugs and their hidden street names, I will then start to interview people and make them listen to popular songs that contain drug use in the lyrics, I do this in hopes to found out whether they know what the singer/rapper is singing about and to question their knowledge about drug use. With this interview i am certain that i will get people who are aware of what the song is about and people who have generally no idea.
After the vox-plots have been completed i will then focus, on how the glamorisation of drug use in lyrics, was present in the early years such as the 1930s before i was even born and that how popular bands such as the Beatles had mention drugs in their lyrics. I will then further develop on this topic and once completed start a conclusion for my documentary, which would result in the end of my piece.

PREAYA: DRUGS, DRUGS,
AND MORE DRUGS NOW IN 2016 THE GLAMORISATION OF DRUG USE IN LYRICS HAS CAUGHT
QUITE THE ATTENTION IN THE MEDIA. WITH RAPPERS STATING HOW THEY CRAVE ECSTASY,
AND SINGERS SAYING IN THEIR SONGS HOW THEY WANT TO DO COCAINE. IT JUST MAKES ME
WONDER DO PEOPLE REALLY KNOW WHAT THEY'RE SINGING ALONG TO.
IM PREAYA SKERRITT
AND THIS IS DRUG USE IN LYRICS.

KNOWN TO BE ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS TYPES OF DRUGS, THESE TYPES OF DRUGS DO

MY GENERATION TENDS
TO SING ALONG TO SONGS THAT PROMOTE DRUG USE, SOME SING IT WITHOUT ACTUALLY
KNOWING THE UNDERLYING MESSAGE IN THESE SONGS. SO TODAY I DECIDED THAT I'M GOING
TO GET SOME PEOPLE THAT ARE WILLING TO LISTEN TO SOME SONGS THAT TALK AND DRUG USE, AND SEE IF THEY
WILL KNOW WHAT THE SINGERS ARE SINGING ABOUT
THE 1ST SONG I
DECIDED FOR A PERSON TO LISTEN TO WAS WE CAN’T STOP BY MILEY CYRUS
IT MAY SEEM LIKE
HAPPY GENERIC POP SONG BUT IF U LISTEN CLOSELY YOU COULD SEE WHERE MILEY CYRUS
MENTIONS DRUG USE IN HER SONG.
*SHOW MILEY SINGING
LINE IN THE BATHROOM*
WAIT A MINTUE REWIND
– REWINDS CLIP
REMEMBER THE STREET
NAME FOR COCAINE WHICH WAS LINE WELL IN THIS SONG MILEY IS ALLEGEDLY SAYING HOW
SHE WANTS TO DO COCAINE IN THE BATHROOM,
LETS SEE IF OUR INTERVIEWEE IS AWARE OF
THAT.
*PLAYS SONG OF WE
Can’t STOP*
WHAT DO YOU THINK
ABOUT THIS SONG?
PERSON RESPONDS
WHAT DO YOU THINK THE
SONG IS ABOUT?
PERSON RESPONDS
OKAY NOW I'M GOING TO
PLAY A SECTION OF THIS SONG, AND I JUST WANT YOU TO TELL ME
WHAT DO YOU THINK
MILEY WAS TALKING ABOUT?
DO YOU THINK TODAY IN
SOCIETY PEOPLE ARE AWARE OF WHAT THEY'RE SINGING ALONG TO?
PLAYS SONG
PERSON RESPONDS
THE NEXT SONG I
DECIDED TO USE WAS A SONG CALLED MOLLYGURL BY LIL DURK, THIS SONG HAS A LOT OF
REFERENCES TO MOLLY WHICH IS KNOWN TO BE THE MOST POPULAR STREET-NAME OF THE
DRUG ECSTASY, YOU COULD SAY THAT THIS SONG SHOWS HOW HE IS UNDER THE EFFECTS OF
THIS DRUG
*PLAYS SONG*
WHAT DO YOU THINK
THIS SONG IS ABOUT?
DO YOU LIKE THIS
SONG?
HE SAYS MOLLY A LOT
ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH THE WORD MOLLY?
AND THE LAST SONG I
DECIDED TO TEST OUT ON PEOPLE IS ALL GOLD EVERYTHING BY TRINIDAD JAMES.
WHAT DO YOU THINK
THIS SONG IS ABOUT?
DO YOU LIKE THIS
SONG?
THEIRS ONE PARTICULAR
PART IN HIS SONG WHERE HE SAYS POPPED THE MOLLY IM SWEATING ARE YOU AWARE OF
WHAT THIS MEANS?
OVERALL FROM THE INTERVIEWS I HAD GAINED MIXED ANSWERS, THEY WERE SOME PEOPLE WHO KNEW WHAT THE
MESSAGE WAS IN THE SONGS AND SOME WHO HAD NO IDEA. IT JUST COMES TO SHOW THAT THEY COULD BE
PEOPLE OUT THEIR IN THE WORLD WHO HAVE NO COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT THEY'RE
SINGING TO.
WHAT MOST PEOPLE
DON’T KNOW IS THAT DRUG USE IN LYRICS WAS PRESENT DECADES AGO BEFORE I WAS EVEN
BORN. IN THE 1930S AN ARTIST CALLED HERB MONRAD ALONG WITH SEVERAL OTHER MUSICIANS WOULD SING ABOUT THE USE OF CANNABIS IN THEIR SONGS.
IT SEEMED LIKE THE
NORM FOR JAZZ AND SWING MUSICIANS TO DO.
A MENTIONING OF DRUGS
WAS ALSO PRESENT IN THE 1960S AND THE 70S WHERE ROCK BECAME MAINSTREAM AND A
PSYCHEDELIC
THIS TYPE OF ERA WAS
ALL ABOUT SEX, DRUGS AND ROCK AND ROLL WITH ARTISTS ON THE SCENE JIMI HENDRIX,
THE BEATLES AND JANIS JOPLIN.
ONE SONG THAT CAUSED
SO MUCH CONTROVERSY WHICH WAS PERFORMED BY THE BEATLES WAS LUCY IN THE SKY
WITH DIAMONDS
MANY PEOPLE THOUGHT THE SONG WAS ABOUT THE DRUG LSD AND HOW JOHN LENNON EXPRESSED THE EFFECTS ON
BEING ON IT
IT WAS REPORTED THAT
PAUL MCCARTNEY A FORMER MEMBER OF THE BEATLES STATED IN A LIFE MAGAZINE ARTICLE
THAT HE HAD BEEN UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF MARIJUANA AND LSD. HE EVEN DISCUSSED
THAT USING LSD MADE HIM HAVE A DEEPER RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD AND SAID HOW HE RECOMMEND POLITICIANS USE IT TO HELP PROMOTE WORLD PEACE.
JOHN LENNON, GEORGE
HARISSON AND BRIAN EPSTEIN CONFESSED THAT THEY HAD TAKEN LSD BEFORE TOO
DESPITE THE
CONTROVERSY THAT THIS SONG HAS RECEIVED JOHN LENNON HAS STATED THAT THE SONG
HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DRUGS AND THAT IT WAS RESPONSE TO A PICTURE HIS
FOUR-YEAR-OLD HAD PAINTED. HE SAID HOW HIS SON BRANG THE PAINTING
HOME AND THAT IT WAS HIS FRIEND LUCY IN THE PAINTING WHO WAS IN THE SKY WITH
DIAMONDS.
THEIR WAS 3
POSSIBILITIES THAT THIS SONG COULD BE ABOUT, LENNONS MOTHER JULIA, A FEMALE
SAVIOR WHO TURNED OUT TO BE HIS WIFE OR A RESPONSE TO WHAT HIS SON HAD
PAINTED.
SO I DECIDED TO
LISTEN TO THE SONG FOR THE 1ST TIME AND SEE WHAT I THINK ABOUT IT
AND DETECT WHETHER THIS SONG COULD BE ABOUT DRUGS OR COULD JUST BE A SONG THAT
WAS A RESPONSE TO HIS SON.
THE SONG HAS A VERY
FUN VIBE TO IT, IN MY OPINION AT THE START OF IT, IT DOES SOUND A BIT CREEPY, I
UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE WOULD THINK THEY'RE SINGING ABOUT LSD AS IT DOES MENTION
SOME EFFECTS ON BEING ON THE DRUG, PEOPLE WHO HAVE USED LSD SAID HOW IT MAKES
THEM FEEL PEACEFUL AND ONE WITH THE UNIVERSE AND THIS SONG IN MY OPINION SOUNDS
VERY CALM AND SOOTHING UNTIL IT REACHES THE CHORUS.
OVERALL I BELIEVE THAT THIS
SONG COULD BE A RESPONSE TO HIS SON PAINTING AS THE SONG SOUNDS VERY HAPPY AND
CHILDLIKE, SORT AS IF HE IS TELLING A STORY, BUT ON THE OTHER-HAND HE COULD JUST
BE SINGING HOW THIS DRUG MAKES HIM FEEL IN THE CLOUDS.
BUT I GUESS JOHN
LENNON HIMSELF WOULD STATE THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT HIS SONG IS ABOUT.
IT JUST COMES TO SHOW
THAT A SONG COULD INTERPRET DIFFERENT MEANINGS, WE COULD BE SINGING ALONG TO A
SONG WITH AN INTENTION THAT IT MEANS THIS BUT IT COULD MEAN THE COMPLETE
OPPOSITE. BUT HERE IS THE QUESTION FOR YOU
GUYS, DO YOU THINK EVERYONE WILL BE AWARE OF THE SECRET MESSAGES OF DRUG USE IN LYRICS? IM PREAYA SKERRITT AND I BELIEVE THAT ONE DAY WE WILL ALL KNOW ABOUT THE
GLAMORISATION OF DRUG USE IN LYRICS.
